TEA LAMP「茶燈」 by Cynthia Mak | Contemporary Geometric Character Design
In the sculptural work, "TEA LAMP," artist and designer Cynthia Mak explores the profound intersection of typographic deconstruction, cultural philosophy, and functional art. The concept is deeply inspired by the structural components of the Chinese character for tea, "茶."
Blending Traditional Heritage with Modern Geometric Abstraction
Recalling a classic metaphor often shared in traditional teahouses—that life is like tea, bitter first and sweet after—Mak reflects on how human experience constantly shifts between moments of darkness and brightness. This poignant duality is masterfully embodied within a functional contemporary lamp object.
Constructed from a vertical stack of three-dimensional geometric forms, the design draws heavily upon the silhouettes and delicate details of traditional Chinese lanterns. Through a vibrant palette of vivid colors and minimalist abstract geometry, the work transforms cultural tradition into a sleek, modern architectural vision that embeds a hidden typographic character. It serves as a beautiful, daily reminder that after a bitter day, a warm, radiant light always awaits at home.
