Title: Anchors of the Harbour, 2025
Medium: Acrylic stripes with aluminium framing
Location: Kimpton Hong Kong Hotel
A trio of installations created for the Kimpton hotel in Hong Kong. The work draws its primary inspiration from the resilient buoys marking the Harbour and the local craftsmanship of weaving.
Acting as a floating anchor and a visual navigator, the sculptures symbolically guide viewers toward the hotel as a destination. Suspended against the panoramic harbour view, the installations create the illusion of buoys floating seamlessly within the seascape beyond.
The forms are a study of geometric abstraction—a signature of my practice—reinterpreting the functional shape of nautical buoys. A vibrant, safety-orange emerges from a woven matrix of serene navy and beige, a palette thoughtfully curated from both the maritime objects and the hotel’s decor.
Executed through a meticulous and labour-intensive, hand-weaving technique traditionally used for objects like dim sum steamers and lanterns, it employs modern materials and a contemporary colour story. This synthesis of heritage craftsmanship with modernist form celebrates Hong Kong's unique spirit, honouring its artisanal past while navigating its dynamic, contemporary future. The installation serves as a beautiful conduit, weaving the essence of the harbour into the elegant destination of the Kimpton Hotel.
